I’m Don, and I think everyone has a growth mindset. I believe in collaborative learning, storytelling, and embodied cognition. Collaborative learning is just teamwork. Storytelling is talking to your friends about what you did last weekend. Embodied cognition is learning how to ride a bike. I have years of experience working as a project manager at a biotechnology company, and I think project based learning is awesome. I have a Master’s in Biology and a Master's in Management, and I am finishing my Doctorate in Educational Leadership at Pepperdine University. I am a STEM education advocate. I like to learn, and I like to help others grow their mind. I enjoy walking my dog with my wife everyday, and golfing on the weekends.

Geoff Stone

Art Guide

I'm Geoff Stone and I grew up in in the desert community of Borrego Springs CA. I studied animation and illustration at San Jose State University and recently earned my teaching credential at San Diego State. It's my great joy to help beginning artists develop the skills and the mindset to share their own vision and their unique stories with their community and the world. We're going to explore the creative process, learn about visual communication and make a whole lot of art! When I'm not teaching drawing and painting I'm often drawing and painting for myself! I also love hiking in the desert, exploring the beaches, watching soccer and reading books.

Marisa Bruyneel-Fogelman

Founder and Executive Director

Marisa Fogelman has always identified as an educator. By the time she graduated high school, she knew her life’s purpose included opening a school and changing our educational paradigm. She followed her dream and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley and her master’s degree in English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. While living in New York City, Marisa taught high school English and helped to grow and develop a school from its second year of inception.

For over a decade, Marisa lived her life’s passion as a progressive educator, working with students from diverse backgrounds in various educational settings. When she knew the time had come to transform education, she moved to San Diego to realize her dream and open SOUL Charter School. While crafting and perfecting each element of SOUL, Marisa furthered her experience by working at a local San Diego charter school. Additionally, she held a position as Regional College Readiness Counselor helping high school students design and execute a vision for their future.

Marisa believes that education is our greatest vehicle for social change and that there is nothing of greater importance than to invest in our youth. She believes that the purpose of education is best defined by its Latin roots, “to draw out that which lies within.” Through a SOUL-centered approach, Marisa knows that we can pioneer a new model of education. As a result, our children will masterfully create a better world for us to live in.
